Cosby falls to Unaka 54-12 in region finale

COSBY – The Eagles’ defense played well early, but Unaka’s high-octane offense was too much to handle in the end, as Cosby lost its final region game by a score of 54-12.

Devonte Wigfall intercepted Unaka quarterback Landon Ramsey on the Rangers’ first drive to give Cosby good field position for their first possession.

The Eagles drove to the Unaka 5-yard line, but turned the ball over when quarterback Tyler Turner fumbled a handoff, which the Rangers recovered.

Unaka capitalized on the turnover when Ramsey hit Caleb Lydick for a 68-yard touchdown to take an 8-0 lead.

Cosby would answer on the ensuing drive when Turner found Hayden Green for a 59-yard score. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, however, leaving the Eagles down 8-6.

The Rangers would pour it on later in the first quarter, scoring two touchdowns and converting the two-point conversions to take a 24-6 lead after Ramsey found Devin Ramsey for a 56-yard score.

Despite the 18-point deficit, Cosby finished the first quarter with three defensive turnovers, with two coming on interceptions — one by Wigfall and another by Braydon Hall — and Dominic Cowles recovered a fumble.

Unaka scored another touchdown to make the halftime score 32-6. Turner was 4-of-5 passing at halftime for 81 yards with one touchdown and one interception and all four completions going to Hayden Green.

The Rangers took a 46-6 lead into the fourth quarter after two third quarter touchdowns. Nate Joyce would add one last Cosby score to make the final 54-12.

Cosby (0-7, 0-4 Class 1A Region 1) will host Sale Creek (3-5) in the season finale on Friday. Unaka (6-2, 3-1 Class 1A Region 1) currently sits at second-place in the region and will travel to Hampton (5-2) for a non-region game on Friday.
