NEWPORT – Senior night did not quite go as planned for Cocke County on Friday night, as top-ranked West came in and destroyed the Fighting Cocks 76-7.

The Rebels amassed 609 yards of total offense, with 490 of those yards coming on the ground. West averaged 19 yards per play.

The rout began on West’s first play from scrimmage, as Brayden Latham sliced the Fighting Cock defense for an 89-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead just under two minutes into the game.

The Rebels took a 14-0 lead when quarterback Carson Jessie found Jaqurius Wrenn for a 28-yard score with 6:12 left in the first quarter.

Cocke County faked a punt on its next drive, which failed, giving West the ball at the Fighting Cocks’ 43-yard line. The short field lead to another score, which gave the Rebels three touchdowns in just six offensive snaps.

Syxx Hoard went into the end zone for his second touchdown in consecutive drives on a 9-yard scamper to put West in front 28-0 with 2:46 left in the first. The Rebels would take a 35-0 lead at the end of the first quarter when Wrenn returned a Cocke County punt 45 yards to paydirt.

The onslaught continued in the second quarter as Zion Mattress dashed 49 yards to the end zone for a touchdown to give West a 42-0 lead with just over 10 minutes left before halftime. The Rebels were on pace for nearly 80 points in the first half.

Trailing 49-0 in the second quarter, the Fighting Cocks would finally get on the board, cutting the deficit to 49-7 with 3:34 left in the first half.

Will Hairell ran for a 17-yard score with 2:06 left in the half, set up by back-to-back runs by Silas Cole. West took a 56-7 lead into the intermission.

West did not let up in the second half, however, even with a running clock. The Rebels led 70-7 after three quarters and went on to a 76-7 win.

Cocke County (1-8, 1-3 Class 5A Region 2) will have this weekend off before traveling to Sevier County for its season finale on October 29.

West (7-1, 4-0 Class 5A Region 2) will go outside of the region this week, as the Rebels travel to Maryville (8-0) on Friday.
