Sevier County earns first win in Dandridge since 2013

DANDRIDGE – Sevier County traveled to Dandridge on Friday night and came away with a hard-fought 21-13 win over Jefferson County.

The Smoky Bears got on the board late in the first quarter when quarterback Collin Shannon ran for a score, making the score 7-0 with 1:33 left in the quarter.

Sevier County would then go in front 14-0 when Shannon scrambled on fourth down and found Corbin Overbay for a 29-yard touchdown with just 1:48 left in the half. The Smoky Bears would go to the half with a 14-0 advantage.

Jefferson County would cut the Smoky Bears’ lead to 14-7 when sophomore quarterback Izaiah Hall found Kade Parker for a 49-yard touchdown with 6:51 remaining in the third quarter.

Sevier County would stretch its lead to 21-7 in the fourth quarter when Shannon connected with Overbay for a 19-yard touchdown with 9:22 remaining in the game.

The Patriots would inch closer, as Hall tossed an 18-yard strike to Blake Overton in the back of the end zone, cutting the Sevier lead to 21-13 with just 5:46 left in the game.

The Smoky Bears faced a 3rd-and-8 at its own 45-yard line with 2:32 left in the game. Jefferson County desperately needed to make a stop, having only one timeout left.

Shannon would pick up the first down on a 17-yard run and force the Patriots to use their first timeout, as Sevier County was able to run out the clock, picking up its first win at Jefferson County since 2013, when the Smoky Bears came away with a 42-35 win.

Collin Shannon finished with 164 yards and two touchdowns on 17-of-24 passing, while six of those completion, including the two scores, went to Corbin Overbay for 110 yards.

Jefferson County’s Omarian Mills ran for 140 yards on 22 carries to lead the Patriots.

Sevier County (1-0) will host Carter (1-0) on Saturday, August 28. The Smoky Bears defeated the Hornets 45-34 in 2020.

Jefferson County (0-1) will travel to Newport on Friday night to take on Cocke County (0-1).
