Governors come up short against West Ridge 28-21

BY BRIAN HAMILTON

MARYVILLE – William Blount fell to 1-6 on the season after West Ridge came in and took a 28-21 win from the Governors.

“There’s no shortcuts and no easy ways to success,” William Blount head coach Philip Shadowens said after the loss. “We’re not a team that can afford to have 100 yards in penalties, but I thought our kids fought their butts off, and they’re always going to do that.”

Willian Blount took an early 7-0 lead when quarterback Matthew Clemmer went into the end zone for a score with 7:15 left in the first quarter.

West Ridge would tie the game at 7-7 when Ethan Bergeron found Isaac Hayine for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 10:19 to go in the second.

Bergeron would toss another touchdown — this time to Austin Riner — for a 31-yard score, giving the Wolves a 14-7 halftime advantage.

West Ridge would increase its lead to 21-7 with just under nine minutes when Cale Bryant went into the end zone for a 12-yard score.

The Governors would pull back to within a touchdown when Austin Aucker intercepted a Bergeron pass and took it 25 yards to paydirt, cutting the Wolves’ lead to 21-14.

Bergeron ran for an 8-yard score with 5:45 remaining to sink William Blount into a 28-14 deficit. The Governors would match West Ridge on the following possession, as Clemmer hit Matossian for a 10-yard score with 3:15 remaining.

The Governors would not be able to send the game into overtime, as they fell by a score of 28-21.

William Blount (1-6, 0-3 Class 6A Region 1) will have the week off before hosting Dobyns-Benner (5-2, 2-1) in a regional matchup. West Ridge (5-2) will travel to David Crocket on October 8 for a non-region matchup.
