Gatlinburg-Pittman takes down Seymour behind Barton’s 40 points and 10 assists

BY BRIAN HAMILTON GATLINBURG – Gatlinburg-Pittman picked up their 12th win in the last 13 games with a 73-54 drubbing of Seymour on Thursday night, as Jayden Barton went off for 40 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds, along with three steals and three blocks. Seymour kept the game close and had an early lead, as the teams were tied at 16-16 after one quarter, but Barton scored 33 of his 40 in the final three quarters, as the Highlanders pulled away. “(Barton) had 35 earlier in the year but that’s definitely been his most in a while,” Gatlinburg-Pittman head coach …

Fulton holds off Seymour in overtime to clinch district regular-season title

BY BRIAN HAMILTON SEYMOUR – If you haven’t noticed, this isn’t your usual Seymour boy’s basketball team. The Eagles have already clinched their first winning season since the 2012-13 campaign and went toe-to-toe with Fulton at Jody Wright Arena back on December 16, falling 50-48. While many probably thought that was a fluke, the biggest question coming into Tuesday night’s contest was if Seymour could push the perennial basketball power to the brink for a second time. The Eagles answered those questions emphatically, battling back from a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to send the game to overtime at 51-51 on …

Cocke County overcomes slow start to defeat Seymour 88-75

BY BRIAN HAMILTON NEWPORT – Seymour opened the game with hot shooting and led most of the first half until Cocke County used a 13-0 run to take the lead for good later in the second quarter. The Fighting Cocks would stymie a late Seymour push to come away with an 88-75 win. “I thought, for the first time in a while, that we fought through some adversity,” Cocke County coach Casey Regan said after the game. “Credit Seymour, they came out and made a lot of shots early and I don’t think we defended particularly up to our standard, …

Carter routs Seymour 81-47 for district title behind McNew’s 23 points

BY BRIAN HAMILTON SEYMOUR – Dalton McNew paced Carter early, scoring 16 first quarter points and 23 in the first half, to help guide the Hornets to an 81-47 win over Seymour and a Class 3A District 3 title. Carter wrapped up its district schedule Monday night with a record of 5-1 with the lone loss coming a week ago at Northview Academy (3-2 District 3). “It means a lot to win your district, no matter who you are, or what it is,” Carter head coach Tyler Cate said after the game. “It definitely means a lot, but there could …

Cosby rallies from 13 down in fourth quarter to defeat Seymour

BY BRIAN HAMILTON COSBY – Both Cosby and Seymour entered Thursday night’s contest with just two wins on the season. Seymour looked as if it would leave Cosby on a snowy night with their third victory of the season, as the Eagles led for the majority of the game and held a 13-point advantage in the fourth quarter. Cosby would not go quietly into the night, however, as the home Eagles went on a furious rally within the span of three minutes to get back in the game and pull out a 65-59 win. “We beat Seymour by 20 over …
