ERWIN – Cosby fell to 0-2 Friday night, as Unicoi County blew out the Eagles 44-0 behind four touchdowns combined from Nehemiah Edwards and Caleb Pelaez.

Palaez had an 11-yard touchdown run and also returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown.

The route was on early, as Edwards went 59 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. The junior also scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Edwards finished the night with 80 yards and two scores on six carries, while Palaez ran for 76 yards on six rushes.

“They are two good ones,” Unicoi County head coach Drew Rice said after the game. “As the season went on last year, we were playing a lot of sophomores and you could see them gaining experience.”

The Blue Devils took a 37-0 lead into halftime, as Esteban Mendoza made a 34-yard field goal and Bryson Peterson found Brayden Hendrickson for a 9-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

The Eagles completed just five passes for -9 yards in the first half, as Cosby’s Tyler Turner was constantly under pressure and unable to get in a rhythm.

Bransan Salts would score the game’s final touchdown during the third quarter, running for a 31-yard score to increase the Unicoi County lead to 44-0, which would be the final margin.

Cosby (0-2) will host Jellico (0-2) in a Class 1A Region 1 matchup. The Blue Devils defeated Cosby 52-6 in 2020.

“Every game is important, but this is a region game and for them to be our rival, we need to win this one,” Cosby head coach Kevin Hall said.

Unicoi County (2-0) is coming off wins against Cosby and Northview Academy and will travel to North Carolina Friday to face Madison County.
